Hydrogen applications

Hydrogen has a variety of applications and plays a crucial role in the transition to sustainable energy. Here are some key application areas:

  • Industry:

Existing industrial processes: Hydrogen is currently widely used in industry (such as petrochemicals, food, steel, electronics) worldwide as a raw material. It is mainly used for the production of methanol and ammonia. Making this hydrogen demand more sustainable is a priority, with blue and green hydrogen offering alternatives.

New applications: Hydrogen can also offer new possibilities within industrial processes, such as partial replacement of coke in the steel industry or high-value heating demands without CO2 emissions1 .

  • Mobility:

Hydrogen is becoming increasingly interesting for transport. Although battery-electric drives are popular, hydrogen technology is complementary. Especially for heavy freight transport, hydrogen can be a suitable option. It improves air quality and offers an alternative to batteries .

  • Energy storage and transport:

Hydrogen can store and transport large amounts of energy. It is an efficient way to harness and distribute renewable energy.

It can also serve as a fuel for vehicles, such as hydrogen cars.

d.Sustainability of buildings:

Hydrogen can be used to heat buildings without CO2 emissions.
